Georgetown! |
 |
| Community Built through the spirit of
its residents, El Dorado County, CA |
 |
Located Above Garden Valley
off Marshall Rd. and Hwy 193
in the California Gold Country, North Central Calif.
Very
horse friendly, Georgetown is the principal community on the
Georgetown Divide, sits on the western crest of the ridge about 15
miles north of Placerville along Highway 193. It is located at the
northern end of the northeast segment of the Mother Lode belt that
extends through Garden Valley and Georgetown to the Middle Fork of
the American River. Gold deposits were found almost continuously
from Pilot Creek to beyond Greenwood. Hence, the district was rich
not only in placer gold, but it was also highly suitable for quartz
mining. When different people visited Georgetown, they often thought
it the "prettiest town in the mountains." Most other mining towns,
such as Coloma and Placerville, are located in valleys or ravines.
Georgetown, somewhat like Garden Valley however, is located on the
summit of a ridge at about 2600 feet in elevation. (Garden Valley is
about 1900, Placerville is about 1700 feet and Coloma is about 900
feet in elevation ) |
